5 Essential Tips for Beginning Archers

1. Start with Proper Form
Before you worry about hitting bullseyes, focus on building a consistent anchor point and release. Your anchor point — where your draw hand touches your face — should be the same every single shot. Most archers anchor with their index finger at the corner of their mouth or just below their ear.
2. Choose the Right Draw Weight
The biggest mistake beginners make is starting with too much draw weight. You should be able to draw your bow smoothly without lifting it skyward or struggling. For adults, 20-30 lbs is ideal for recurve, and 40-50 lbs for compound (thanks to let-off).
3. Focus on the Follow-Through
Don't drop your bow arm the instant you release. Hold your form until the arrow hits the target. This "follow-through" ensures you're not anticipating the shot and introducing last-second movement.
4. Invest in Arrows That Match Your Bow
Arrow spine (stiffness) must match your bow's draw weight and your draw length. Shooting arrows with incorrect spine leads to erratic flight and poor accuracy. Use a spine chart or ask your local pro shop for help.
5. Practice Consistently, Not Excessively
Thirty focused arrows three times per week beats 200 arrows in one marathon session. Quality practice with attention to form builds muscle memory faster than exhausting yourself.
