Carbon Arrows
Carbon arrows are the most popular choice for modern archers. They're lightweight, fast, durable, and maintain straightness even after impacts that would permanently bend aluminum. Available in a wide range of spines and price points.
Best for: Hunting, 3D, and target shooting with compound bows
Aluminum Arrows
Aluminum arrows are heavier, more affordable, and extremely consistent. They're the traditional choice for indoor target archery where wind isn't a factor and the extra weight provides stability.
Best for: Indoor target, beginners, and budget-conscious archers
Wooden Arrows
Wooden arrows (typically cedar) are the traditional choice for longbow and recurve shooters. They have a classic look and feel, but require more maintenance and are less durable than modern materials.
Best for: Traditional archery, longbow, and period-correct reenactment
Key Factors in Arrow Selection
1. Spine
The most critical factor. Arrow spine must match your bow's draw weight, your draw length, and your point weight. Always refer to the manufacturer's spine chart.
2. Weight (GPI)
Grains Per Inch (GPI) determines total arrow weight. Heavier arrows penetrate better but fly slower. Lighter arrows fly faster but may lack penetration. For hunting, aim for 8-10 GPI; for target, 6-8 GPI is common.
3. Straightness
Measured as the maximum deviation from perfectly straight. ±.006" is fine for hunting; ±.003" is good for competition; ±.001" is premium match-grade.
4. Front of Center (FOC)
FOC is the percentage of the arrow's weight forward of center. Higher FOC (10-15%) improves broadhead flight and penetration. Standard target FOC is 7-10%.
Our Recommendations
For most hunters, we recommend quality carbon arrows in the $8-15 per shaft range with .003" or better straightness. For target shooters, invest in .001" straightness arrows for the tightest groups.
